Bio

I’m Tanja, a registered Psychotherapist and Counsellor (ACA25521) with over 20 years of experience in supporting individuals, couples, and families through life’s most challenging moments.

My journey into psychotherapy began with a deep interest in human connection, emotional intelligence, and genuine understanding, and it has grown into a professional commitment to walking alongside people as they navigate transitions, distress, identity, and relationships.

I hold a Bachelor of Applied Science in Psychology (Deakin University), a Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy (The Cairnmillar Institute), and advanced training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy from The Gottman Institute (Seattle, USA). I am also a licensed facilitator of the Tuning into Kids program (University of Melbourne) and a certified trainer with the Heroic Imagination Project (New York).

At Pathways Psychotherapy, I offer a compassionate, non-judgmental therapeutic presence. I believe that you are the expert of your own life, and my role is to be a skilled companion, this means listening deeply, understanding your experience, and helping you find clarity, resilience, and meaningful change. My approach is collaborative and relational, anchored in emotional awareness and attunement rather than prescriptive direction. I work integratively with evidence-based modalities, such as Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT), Person-Centered Counselling, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). I like to tailor each session to your unique goals and strengths.

I have experience in support clients with a wide range of concerns including:

  • Anxiety, depression, stress, and burnout
  • Trauma and post-traumatic stress
  • Relationship and couples issues
  • Parenting support and respectful communication
  • Neurodiversity, ADHD and ASD
  • Identity, sexuality, self-esteem and life transitions
  • Workplace conflict and adjustment challenges
  • Grief, loss, and adjustment difficulties
  • Recovery from challenging, toxic and abusive relationship including narcissistic abuse

My practice is diversity-affirming; I embrace individuals from all backgrounds, including different cultures, religions and LGBTQIA+ communities, and those with complex trauma histories.

Therapy with me is a space where you can come exactly as you are; without fear of judgment. I value empathy, presence, curiosity, and humour, and I create an environment that invites trust, exploration, and growth. Whether you’re seeking support for a specific concern or life feels overwhelming in ways that are hard to articulate, I’m here to help you find your way forward. I work with clients in person in practice in Melbourne, Australia and via secure Telehealth, ensuring flexibility and accessibility.

You don’t have to face your struggles alone. If you’re ready to explore healing, connection, and personal insight, I’d be honoured to work with you. Come as you are; together we’ll find your pathway.

Experience

I’m a highly experienced and relational Psychotherapist & Counsellor dedicated to supporting individuals, couples, and families to navigate life’s challenges with clarity, compassion, and resilience.

I hold a Bachelor of Applied Science in Psychology (Deakin University, with Distinction) and a Graduate Diploma in Counselling and Psychotherapy from The Cairnmillar Institute, and I am a registered practitioner with the Australian Counselling Association.

I’ve also completed specialised training in Gottman Method Couples Therapy through The Gottman Institute, strengthening my expertise in relationship and attachment-based work.

I integrate evidence-based modalities such as ACT, CBT, DBT, Emotionally Focused Therapy, and Person-Centred approaches to tailor therapy to each person’s unique needs.

I’m passionate about creating a safe, affirming space where high-functioning clients — often feeling stuck between where they are and where they want to be — can grow, heal, and strengthen connections.

My work encompasses areas including anxiety, self-esteem, trauma, life transitions, relational patterns, narcissistic abuse, ADHD, neurodiversity, and sexual identity exploration.

I work both in person in Melbourne, Australia and via secure telehealth, offering flexible access to therapy without long waitlists.

My practice is diversity-affirming and inclusive, particularly for LGBTQIA+ communities and clients navigating complex emotional histories.

I value empathy, presence, curiosity, and collaboration, and I continually refine my practice through professional development and lived clinical experience.

If you’re ready to explore deeper understanding and meaningful change, I’m here to walk with you on that journey.
